Lithuanian PM may visit Belarus June 26

The Prime Minister of Lithuania may visit on June 26, Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Valery Voronetsky told reporters on June 19. On June 18-19 Minsk played host to another round of Belarus-Lithuania ministerial consultations. A delegation was headed by Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavichus.

“We think that the main events within the framework of the PM’s visit will take place in the Grodno oblast and in the city of Grodno . We hope to sign an agreement on border crossing by residents of the frontier regions. We are also working on other documents,” Valery Voronetsky said.

According to Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Evaldas Ignatavichus, the forthcoming talks will focus on trade and economic cooperation. “We have had good dynamics in trade lately. Today we are all dealing with the global financial and economic crisis and the global trends have affected this good dynamics. We will be looking for the ways to help and to reverse this trend,” Evaldas Ignatavichus said. 

In 2008 the trade between and amounted to $856.4 million, up 15% from a year earlier. Belarusian export to increased by more than 10% to $622.5 million. Lithuanian imported surged by almost 30% to $233.97 million. had a $388.5mn surplus in trade with .

In January-April 2009 the trade contracted by 57.7% as against the same period last year. Export to $81.9 million, import to $55.6 million. had a $26.3mn surplus.
