Belarus, Azerbaijan discuss production cooperation

Sergei Sidorsky, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus , has arrived in Baku on a working visit to discuss the prospects of production cooperation between Belarus and Azerbaijan, it was learnt from the spokesman for the Prime Minister Alexander Timoshenko. 

Sergei Sidorsky is scheduled to meet with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and have face-to-face negotiations with Prime Minister Artur Rasi-zade, followed by extended talks. 

The both sides are set to discuss deliveries of Belarusian agro-industrial complex production, mutual research projects and the establishment of export promotion centres in the two countries. 

The members of the Belarusian delegation are scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Azerbaijan’s high officials, such as the Minister of Economic Development of Azerbaijan, the Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan, the Head of Construction and Architecture Committee and the Chief Architect of the city of Baku . Minister of Agriculture and Food of Belarus Semyon Shapiro will meet with his Azeri counterpart Ismet Abbasov. 

In 2008, ranked sixth in Belarus’ foreign trade, moving from the seventh up to sixth position in terms of export. The commodity turnover increased by 24.5% to $111.7 million. Belarusian export to increased by 22%( up to $105.4 million), the import surged by 90.9% ($6.2 million). had a surplus of $99.2 million in trade with . 

For the past five years the bilateral trade has increased 10.7 times to exceed $100 million in 2008. Belarusian exports to have surged 12 times over this period. 

Belarusmajor exports to are machinery (33.5% of total exports), foodstuffs (11.1%), woodworking products (5.5%), medicines (4.1%), construction materials (6.4%) and petrochemical products (2.5%). 

Belarus mainly imports agricultural products and raw materials (vegetable and fruit juices), acylic spirits, synthetic fabrics. 

In 2008 Belarusian exports increased across a number of industries: food industry (up 52.6%), construction (206.5%), machinery construction (25.1%), petrochemistry (24.7%). The export portfolio increased from 197 items in 2007 to 232 in 2008. In 2008 the number of export promotion centres grew to 26. The export through these centres increased by 37%. 

In January-May 2009, the trade totalled $48.6 million, up 10% from the same period last year. Exports amounted to $46.5 million (up 10.7%), import $2.2 million (down by 3.4%). had a $44.3mn surplus in trade with . 

In 2007 the two countries launched several joint projects in manufacturing cooperation. Truck and tractor assembly facilities were opened in . The Belarusian technologies were used to restore the optical and mechanical works. Mobile drilling equipment based on MZKT chassis are now manufactured in . The two countries are considering launching new assembly productions of Belarusian auto-cranes, lifts, medicines, window frames, and dairy products

In March 2007 the intergovernmental Belarusian-Azeri commission for trade and economic cooperation held the fourth session on the level of prime ministers. The session adopted the action plan to implement the programme of long-term social and economic cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Azerbaijan until 2015. 

In May 2007 the Republic of Belarus held its first national exhibition in . 

In May 2008 Minsk played host to the fifth session of the intergovernmental Belarusian-Azeri commission fro trade and economic cooperation.
