Foreign ministries of Belarus, Iraq to sign cooperation protocol

The foreign ministries of Belarus and Iraq are set to sign a cooperation protocol, Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Aleinik said as he met with his Iraqi counterpart Labeed Majeed Abbawi on 21 June, BelTA has learnt.

“Your visit to Minsk is a testimony to the mutual interest in a closer political dialogue and resumption of a large-scale cooperation between our countries,” Sergei Aleinik said.

He informed that the foreign ministries of Belarus and Iraq are holding the first round of political consultations. “The cooperation protocol between the two foreign ministries to be signed following the consultations will lay a good foundation for the system-based and efficient political dialogue between our ministries,” Sergei Aleinik said.

The parties will discuss the high-level political dialogue between the countries, the development of a legal and treaty basis of the bilateral cooperation, collaboration within the framework of international organizations, the cooperation in science, education, culture, as well as the regional development and the situation in the Middle East and North Africa.

“We are confident about the future of our relations and are interested in the full-fledged cooperation between Belarus and Iraq,” Sergei Aleinik said.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Iraq Labeed Majeed Abbawi said that the ongoing visit will make a great contribution to enhancing the bilateral cooperation.

A reminder, an Iraqi delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Labeed Majeed Abbawi is in Minsk on a working visit on 20-23 June. The Belarusian side is led by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik.

The Iraqi delegation is also expected to meet with Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov, Chairman of the International Affairs and CIS Relations Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Karpenko. The delegation is set to take part in the opening ceremony of the building of the Embassy of Iraq in Minsk, and visit the National Library of Belarus.
