Belarus, USA in joint projects on low-enriched uranium

The Sosny United Energy and Nuclear Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus together with the US scientists implements two projects involving low-enriched uranium fuel, BelTA learnt from director general of the Sosny Institute Viacheslav Kuvshinov.

The projects are implemented at Yalina and Giatsint test benches of the university. The scientists study various aspects of the interaction of uranium with neutrons, trying to answer the questions how different degrees of uranium fuel enrichment influence the processes and what types of fuel should be used for the most efficient operation of nuclear facilities. “It is too early to speak about any concrete results of the research as about 1.5 or 2 years are left till the end of the studies,” Viacheslav Kuvshinov said.

He said that that the institute plans to organize training of staff members and students and Yalina and Giatsint test benches. In his words, Giatsint is actually a mini-nuclear plant, only without power generation as it has the same rods and uranium bars.

The institute has held a series of consultations with the universities that train nuclear specialists. “We are creating a affiliate of schools of various universities. We will hold the training courses at this affiliate. We have already equipped a specialized classroom with a super computer for these purposes,” Viacheslav Kuvshinov said.

Apart from that, there is a need in a series of other researches at the abovementioned test benches. The researches are envisaged by a state program of nuclear power engineering development in Belarus.

The state scientific institution, the Sosny United Energy and Nuclear Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, is a legal successor of the Nuclear Energy Institute under the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, which was founded in 1965. The institute implements various state research programs and it is also the directing agency of the Nuclear Technologies for Belarus Economy program.
