China has been invited to partake in the construction of a coal-fired power plant in Belarus

China has been invited to partake in the construction of a coal-fired power plant in Belarus, Energy Minister of Belarus Alexander Ozerets told media on 19 September.

“We offer our Chinese partners to consider participation in our projects on the development of a coal basin and the construction of power plants running on solid fuel,” the minister said. There have been outlined several possible sites for the construction of a new power facility. “I think very soon we will receive the answer from our partners,” the Belarusian official said.

Alexander Ozerets also took note of the importance to implement the upgrade project at the Minsk CHP-2 plant with Chinese investments. The facility was visited by Belarus’ Premier Mikhail Myasnikovich and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China Wu Bangguo on 19 September.

This is the first out of six projects being implemented in Belarus with China’s participation. “The facility has already reached those parameters that we have been expected. Now we produce cheaper power,” Alexander Ozerets stressed. “The production of additional cheap electricity will keep about $16 million from flowing outside the country,” he added. In his words, in 2011 the country has managed to reduce the foreign currency outflow by $260 million due to high-technology power facilities. “Cooperating with China and using the technologies they offer we will be able to renew our energy system and reduce electricity costs,” Alexander Ozerets added.

President of China National Corporation for Overseas Economic Cooperation Ma Zhiwu, for his part, stated that China is interested in further cooperation with Belarus in the energy and other sectors.

While visiting Minsk CHP-2 plant Mikhail Myasnikovich and Chinese statesman Wu Bangguo discussed the prospects of the Belarusian-Chinese partnership in energy. The Chinese official said that China is ready to offer the latest technologies in the area.
